Imperial Fora
|
The forum was for the Romans the center of every city, where there were the main public buildings, and the big market. The Roman Forum began to be built in the 7th century before Christ, when buildings used for political, religious and above trading and social purposes started to rise. But when Rome had one million inhabitants (the biggest city of the period), during the imperial period, the Roman Forum was not able to represent the power of the city and thus a great restoration began.
The first of Imperial forum was built by Julius Caesar in the year 54 b.C.(Forum of Caesar) and became soon the model for the others, built later: the Forum of Augustus, the Forum of Vespasian, the Forum of Nerva and the Forum of Trajan, built in the year 113 A.D., the most imposing one.
Today the immense area of the Imperial Fora is open to the public: there are a lot of monuments and ruins, among which we remember the Tabularium, that has a facade with arches and dominates the area, the Curia Iulia, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, Arch of Titus and the famous Trajan's Column.
